Video Rock Inspiration #2 : Trapper Keepers
I got a surprising amount of inspiration from the old 80s Trapper Keepers. I love the illustrated and air brushed design styles found in these relics. If you are a little too young to remember what these things are, they are 3 ring binders mixed with some brilliant marketing.
Yeah, there was the trademark design of the folders that had pockets that were large and sideways, to “Keep” your crap from falling out. But they also hired a myriad of artists to capture the design styles popular at the time and plaster them all over the front of the notebook.
At one point in the mid 80s, every single kid had one of these. It’s incredible to think about this from a marketing and market penetration aspect. Really, they are just binders. Tons of manufacturers make binders. So, Mead made them cool. Kids thought, “I can have a lame notebook, or a totally sweet one with a Ferrari/Pony/Space scene on it.” Trapper Keeper FTW!
