Tree Killer of the Week: Kinko's
I try to conserve as much as the next guy. If I can avoid printing a receipt or confirmation, I’ll opt for that. If I can simply email or use a USB drive to transfer a document rather than burning a CD or DVD, I’ll take that option. Granted, there are resources used either way, but I still like to think that I am doing some sort of good by not needing to chop down a tree to print out a...

Harry Frank Joins Red Giant
Dear Readers, As many of you well know, my current professional career is split between two distinct sides of the same coin. One one side, I mostly spend my days working as a freelance motion designer. This has garnered many memorable experiences of working with tremendously talented people — from my roots, working with the unrelenting post-production and design professionals of Detroit, to...

This is a work-in-progress experiment using Particular and Form to create a freely moving tunnel. The motion is driven with expressions, without any keyframes. The color is driven by the music. It’s not quite there yet, perhaps because of the music selection. Once tweaked, I’ll post the project and some variations for download.

The Motion Exchange →
As a newly transplanted freelancer in LA, I’ve seen my credentials emailed out routinely to various shops in the area, and I’ve seen the same shops posting for jobs looking for people with my exact credentials. As I’ve seen over and over, there is a lack of cohesiveness to the motion design industry that connects those that need talent to the talent that is out there. There are...

Video Rock Inspiration #2 : Trapper Keepers
I got a surprising amount of inspiration from the old 80s Trapper Keepers. I love the illustrated and air brushed design styles found in these relics. If you are a little too young to remember what these things are, they are 3 ring binders mixed with some brilliant marketing.
Yeah, there was the trademark design of the folders that had pockets that were large and sideways, to “Keep”...

Video Rock Inspiration #1
I’ll be posting a lot of the places where I found my inspiration in producing the elements and designs for Video Rock. First is Michael Orduña at Fatoe.com
Adobe & Toolfarm eSeminar - Trapcode Particular
Here is a still frame example of the type treatment I’ll be making at the eSeminar today for Adobe and Toolfarm. I’ll go through a lot of different custom particle effects, as well as lots of simple particle glow effects. I’ll also show just a few elements from Video Rock, as well as some elements from Video Rock 2, already in progress.

No matter how hard the rejection you receive, remember letters like this. Andy Warhol was snubbed by MoMA when trying to give them a gift of one of his drawings.

The Art of Perception & The Perception of Art
A while ago, when my toddler was still a young baby, I was having lunch with some former students of mine. Somewhere in the background, a baby started crying. To the 20-something designers, they found it distracting and annoying. Personally, I didn’t even notice it, as the father of a six month old baby. I realized that my brain had quickly altered its perception based on my personal...

Tweening as a Freelance Animator
What you carry faith in is a very personal thing. However, if you are freelance, I want to you to have faith in at least one thing: yourself.
As a freelancer, one inevitably encounters those times in between the bookings. This is the critical area, as a freelancer, to appreciate the flexibility of freelance and NOT PANIC.
This is not the time to cut your rates, or consider that low ball job...
